Farmers told to establish agribusiness saccos

By Erick Nyayiera

Farmers in Siaya County have been encouraged to establish more agribusiness Savings and Credit Co-operative societies (Sacco’s) to enhance their socio-economic development.
Bondo Sub-county Director of Co-operatives Aineah Ayamba said Siaya County will only develop if farmers can move from traditional forms of co-operative societies which only dealt with specific crops such as cotton to modern forms of co-operatives.
He said that it is high time the farmers moved to modern cooperatives that are agribusiness oriented, noting that they can come up with Saccos that deal in various crops for commercial purposes.
Ayamba was speaking during an education day for members of Nyamnwa Agribusiness Sacco at Nyaguda Resource Center in Nyang’oma division where he asked the farmers to change their attitude and embrace the modern farming techniques to be able to do farming as a business.
The Director stated that this will help in boosting food security in the region and to also improve their income generation levels.
Speaking at the same function, Director of the Co-operative Bank Wilfred Ongoro challenged Siaya County Government to support the cooperative movement to ensure effective empowerment of the people right from the rural areas.
He said small Saccos should be supported to be able to tap into the enormous resources such as the lake and the vast fertile land that can enable them to grow socio-economically.
