Cotton farmers in Mbeere South, Embu County, received 1,500 kilogrammes of Bt cotton seed on Thursday as the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) began distributing planting material to cotton growing areas across the country. The seed is enough to plant 1,000 acres.
The handover took place at Mutuobare Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which hosted the launch of the campaign run by the authority’s Miraa, Pyrethrum, Fibre and other Industrial Crops Directorate (MPFID). The programme is meant to raise cotton output nationally.

MPFID Director Grace Kyalo said Embu was a fitting place to start, given its long record in the crop and room to produce much more. In the last season, farmers in the county delivered more than 94,000 kilogrammes of seed cotton worth Ksh6.7 million.
Governor Cecily Mbarire presided over the launch, joined by Deputy Governor Justus Kinyua Mugo and county agriculture officials. AFA board member Peterson Muthathai and Nuts and Oil Crops Acting Director John Adhola also attended.
