Afya Co-operative Savings and Credit Society Limited has appointed CPA Lwanga Mbeche as its new Chief Executive Officer, taking charge as the Sacco navigates a period of financial scrutiny following regulatory revelations of irregular transactions totaling over KSh500 million.
The leadership change comes ahead of Afya Sacco’s Virtual Delegates Meeting scheduled for September 22, 2025, where members are expected to review financial statements, approve the 2026 budget, and discuss governance matters.
CPA Mbeche brings over 20 years of experience in the SACCO sector, including more than 15 years in senior management positions. He joins Afya Sacco from Kimisitu DT SACCO Limited, where he served as CEO for six years, overseeing growth in membership, revenue, loans, and assets. During his tenure, he also implemented digital service channels and launched FOSA operations to improve member service.

He holds an MBA in Strategic Management, a degree in International Business Administration, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA Kenya). He is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, the Institute of Directors (IoD) Kenya, and an African Development Educator ADE (ACCOSCA). He is currently pursuing a PhD in Finance.
While the Sacco has faced scrutiny over past irregularities, the meeting and the new leadership are seen as steps toward restoring transparency and confidence among members.
Members and stakeholders are optimistic that Mbeche’s leadership will guide Afya Sacco towards enhanced governance, operational efficiency, sustainable growth and renewed confidence in the co-operative society.
He brings extensive expertise in financial management and reporting, strategic leadership, performance and change management, as well as in formulating and implementing organizational strategy.
