Kisii County banana farmers have been advised to form or join Saccos to help them get market or loans to improve agricultural activities.
Speaking at Keumbu open air market, County Co-operatives and Marketing Commissioner, Kenyariri told farmers that joining Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies would enable them benefit as a team.
He said one of the ways the farmers could benefit was technical advice on how to avoid middlemen who exploit them.
During the farmers’ tour, the commissioner heard fascinating stories how some of the banana farmers were reaping big from their produce after adapting the latest banana farming technology.
According to some of the farmers who testified, majority of them have been able to double up their produce after adoption of the new method introduced by Consultative Group International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
Peter Nyang’au, 47, a farmer in the area said they adapted tissue culture bananas in 2013 and since then they have been able to double up their income as the bananas mature faster than the indigenous ones and grow bigger fingers.
