The Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) has concluded a high‑level meeting of chairpersons and vice‑chairpersons of co-operatives and SACCOs in Mombasa, setting a new agenda for governance, unity and sector transformation.
The gathering brought together leaders from across the country to deliberate on strengthening accountability and aligning operations with emerging regulatory frameworks, including the New Cooperative Bill 2024 and SASRA regulations.
CAK Chairperson Daniel Marube urged SACCO leaders to embrace unity in order to safeguard the independence of the co-operative movement, noting that cohesion among institutions is critical to protecting members’ interests and ensuring resilience in the face of sector reforms.

Delegates also established the Co-operative Leaders’ Caucus, a new platform designed to enhance advocacy, representation and coordination within the movement. The caucus is expected to provide a stronger voice for co-operatives in policy discussions and strengthen collaboration with regulators and government agencies.
Governance and compliance featured prominently in the deliberations, with participants exploring practical tools to improve leadership structures and ensure adherence to new laws. Leaders underscored the importance of equipping chairpersons with knowledge and networks that will support their responsibilities in steering co-operatives.
The meeting further resolved to create sustainable mechanisms for engagement between CAK and co-operative leaders, a move aimed at deepening dialogue and driving transformation across the sector.
