Controller of Budget arrested for operating unregistered Sacco

Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang’o has been arrested in Mombasa by DCI officers and presented to court to face the charge of operating a Sacco without a license.

The arrest came after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions approved the charges in a letter to the DCI on November 30,2023.

Nyakong’o’s charges are in connection to a complaint made against her and 10 other people in 2016 before she became CoB.

Nyakong’o and 10 others yet to be arrested are accused of conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code, operating a Sacco without a license contrary to Section 24 as read with Section 66 of the Sacco Societies Act 2008, forgery, and uttering a false document c/s 353 of the Penal Code.

Talking to the press, Nyakong’o revealed that she had not been arrested but had presented herself to the police station to record a statement on the said charges.

While appearing before the National Dialogue Committee recently, Nyakong’o detailed how the Treasury has been overbudgeting the salaries of senior government officials through the Consolidated Fund Services.

She revealed that the National Treasury over-budgeted the salaries of state officers that may cost the country over Ksh1 billion in taxpayer’s money.

On X, formerly Twitter, Narc Kenya boss Martha Karua questioned the timing of the arrest which she argues comes just two days after Nyakong’o revealed details of corruption in the budget.

The politician wondered why the people Nyakang’o mentioned as orchestrating the loss of public funds have not been arrested yet the whistle-blower is under arrest.
