Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development Simon Kiprono Chelugui has urged cooperatives to invest in technology to tackle climate change, which is a drawback to the development of the cooperative movement.
The CS said climate change has negatively affected the cooperative movement, hence the need to take bold actions.
He pointed out that for the cooperative movement to tackle the effects of climate change, it needs innovative ideas and practical solutions, technology governance and leadership.
CUK Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Kamau Ngamau said climate change is the primary focus this year since it has adversely affected all sectors of the economy.
He appreciated the commitment of the government to mitigating climate change through the bottom-up economic transformation agenda, including the formulation of climate-smart agriculture and promotion of agroforestry.
The VC said CUK and Moshi Cooperative University will continue to partner on research issues affecting local communities.
He noted that they will continue providing a forum for discussion and interrogation of the research output.
Moshi Cooperative University VC Prof Alfred Sife, in a speech presented by deputy vice chancellor Prof John Safari, said transforming the livelihoods of communities in the era of devastating climate change requires multi-disciplinary approaches.
The programme featured four keynote speakers and more than 35 presentations on topics related to social finance and climate change mitigation, role of entrepreneurship, ICT and cooperatives, sustainability, e-commerce, and financial technology (Fin Tech).
