As Kenya gears up for this year’s Ushirika Day celebrations, the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) has urged county governments to scale up budgetary allocations toward the cooperative sector, emphasizing its pivotal role in driving financial inclusion, rural prosperity, and food security.
Speaking at a media briefing ahead of the event, CAK CEO Daniel Marube reminded counties of their constitutional mandate to support cooperative development, urging them to match that responsibility with tangible investment.
“Counties should allocate more resources to support cooperative promotion, extension services, good governance, and value addition,” said Marube.
His remarks come in the wake of global calls for renewed support for cooperatives, with the United Nations encouraging member states to ensure consistent annual funding for the sector aligning with the ongoing International Year of Cooperatives themed “Cooperatives Build a Better World.”

Marube also called on the national government to enact progressive legislation and strengthen policy frameworks that will accelerate the growth and impact of cooperative societies.
Cooperatives continue to anchor Kenya’s socio-economic transformation. From enabling access to affordable credit to supporting job creation and affordable housing, their role is increasingly prominent. Entities such as the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company have acknowledged cooperatives as key players in housing delivery, projecting that they will contribute up to 25% of the country’s affordable housing units.
In the spirit of Ushirika Day, a nationwide blood donation drive will be held on July 3 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), in collaboration with Kenyatta National Hospital and the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service.
County-level celebrations are slated for Saturday, July 5, while the national event and awards ceremony will be held in Nairobi on July 12.
