Drivers undergo eyesight test

By Eugene Kioko

Drivers in Machakos were recently screened for various eye conditions at Machakos Bus Park in an exercise organized by Machakos Matatu Owners Association.

Association Chairman Steve Mutuku said they organised the clinic in conjunction with the National Transport and Safety Authority and The City Eye Hospital in order to gauge the eyesight fitness of drivers serving under the organisation.

He said a high number of accidents on the road were caused by poor eyesight, which leads to poor judgment by drivers.

Mutuku noted that some drivers are not aware of their condition that can be managed.

“Some drivers may have a problem overtaking due to shortsightedness as they cannot see far thus causing accidents. Those who require to be fitted with specs have been referred to specialists,” he said.

The association, which brings together eighteen Saccos, has over 5000 vehicles operating in the region. It was formed last month.

Mutuku said the association seeks to bring sanity to the transport sector, improve service delivery.
