Elgeyo Marakwet farmers get iron-rich bean seeds amid nutrition drive

Elgeyo Marakwet County has launched the distribution of 15 tonnes of iron-rich Nyota bean seeds to farmers in Keiyo South, Marakwet West, and Keiyo North sub counties under the REACTS-IN program.

The initiative seeks to address severe malnutrition and improve maternal and child health in the region. In a similar exercise last month, 2.5 tonnes of the nutrient-dense beans were distributed to farmers in Marakwet East.

According to the county, the current phase will benefit 7,500 households, with priority given to vulnerable groups such as persons living with disabilities, expectant mothers, and the elderly. Each household will receive 2 kilograms of seeds, expected to yield between 40 and 60 kilograms of beans.

The crop matures within 70 days, making it a viable short-season food security option.

Speaking during the flag-off, Governor Wisely Rotich said the program not only aims to improve nutrition but also supports his administration’s wealth creation strategy.

He noted that farmers can supplement household incomes by selling surplus produce.
