- GDC has launched construction of a Ksh500 million geothermal laboratory and office complex in Nakuru.
- The facility will boost geothermal research, exploration and technical training.
- GDC says the project will strengthen Kenya’s clean energy sector and geothermal expertise.
The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has launched construction of a new Geothermal Science and Analytical Laboratory and office complex at its Kabarak facility in Nakuru County.
GDC Board Chairman Walter Nyambati led the groundbreaking ceremony alongside board members, Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Busieney, general managers and staff.
The project is the first phase of GDC’s masterplan for the Kabarak campus. The company said the laboratory and office facilities will form the foundation of a regional hub for geothermal science, research, innovation and technical training.
Nyambati said the Board and its partners had committed more than Ksh500 million to the construction, describing it as a strategic investment in science, innovation and Kenya’s clean energy future.

Busieney called the moment historic, saying the new laboratories will improve precision in geothermal exploration, well siting and drilling operations. He said the facility addresses limitations of the temporary laboratories GDC has used since it was established 17 years ago.
He added that the investment would strengthen the company’s position as a Geothermal Centre of Excellence, support Kenya’s energy security and industrialisation, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Martha Mburu, Chairperson of the Laboratory Construction Steering Committee and Acting General Manager for Geothermal Resource Development, said the project reflected years of planning. She paid tribute to former GDC leaders and staff whose work laid the groundwork for the facility.
Once complete, the laboratory is expected to improve geothermal data quality, strengthen reservoir management and support GDC’s pursuit of ISO 17025 accreditation. It will also provide infrastructure for advanced geological, geochemical and environmental analysis.
