Gov’t hands Kapsara Tea Factory Sh44.6m to power modernisation

  • Kapsara Tea Factory has received a Ksh44.6 million government grant to upgrade processing machinery.
  • The investment aims to improve tea quality, efficiency and value addition for farmers.
  • The grant is part of a wider government programme to modernise tea factories across Kenya.

The government has presented a Ksh 44.6 million grant to Kapsara Tea Factory in Trans Nzoia County to support machinery upgrades and boost value addition for tea farmers.

Tea Board of Kenya CEO Willy Mutai joined Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe and Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang at the factory for the handover.

The funds will go towards upgrading processing machinery, a move expected to improve operational efficiency and lift tea quality at the factory. Officials said the investment would also strengthen value addition, because the industry is working to deliver greater returns to farmers who supply green leaf to the factory.

The grant forms part of a wider Government push to modernise Kenya’s tea processing infrastructure. Similar grants have recently gone to other factories, including Thumaita, Kapkoros and Gathuthi, as authorities work to build modern, efficient and competitive tea factories capable of producing quality and diversified teas for an evolving global market.

The Kapsara visit is one of two the Cabinet Secretary is making this week, with a further stop planned at Chebut Tea Factory in Nandi County to engage farmers on the ongoing tea sector reforms.
