The government through the Ministry of Energy has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a multi-billion dollar nuclear power plant in Siaya County.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced the initiative recently, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring an adequate and reliable power supply for industries, businesses, and homes.

“This power plant will supply electricity to industries, businesses, and homes. As a country that is rapidly industrializing, the demand for electricity is going to continue rising, and that is why the government is enhancing and expanding our energy generation capacity,” he stated while speaking in Ugunja Constituency, where he was commissioning rural electrification projects and launching Kenya Pipeline Company initiatives.

The CS also revealed that the Ministry is currently focused on identifying the most suitable location around Lake Victoria to host the monumental project. Justus Wabuyabo, the CEO of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), confirmed that three potential sites across the country have been identified for future nuclear power plants, including locations in Kwale, Kilifi, and a third in Siaya.

“There are several possible points around the lake where this project could be established. Studies will be conducted to determine the exact site,” Dr. Wabuyabo explained.

CS Wandayi emphasised that extensive consultations will be held with stakeholders in Siaya County to agree on the modalities for the project’s establishment. These crucial discussions are scheduled for June 26, 2025, and will involve Governor James Orengo, Senator Oburu Oginga, all Members of Parliament, Members of County Assembly, and the local community.

Dr. Wabuyabo added that scholars from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology will also be part of the stakeholders’ meeting, bringing academic expertise to the discussions.
