- Government unveils measures to support farmers affected by drought.
- CS Mutahi Kagwe assures Kenyans there will be no food crisis.
- Drought threatens maize production in key growing regions.
The government has announced measures to cushion farmers against the devastating effects of climate change as prolonged dry conditions threaten crop production in several parts of the country.
CS for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe has assured Kenyans that the country will remain food secure despite the challenges facing the agricultural sector.
Speaking after an assessment tour of Eldoret, Nandi and Trans Nzoia counties, Kagwe acknowledged that changing weather patterns and prolonged drought have affected maize production in some regions, raising concerns over the availability of one of the country’s key food crops.
The CS said the government would not abandon farmers whose crops have been affected by the harsh weather conditions, noting that maize producers play a critical role in feeding the nation and supporting the economy.
He said the government is already implementing interventions aimed at cushioning farmers from the effects of climate change while strengthening agricultural production and ensuring a stable food supply.

Kagwe also sought to reassure Kenyans that there would be no food crisis as a result of the current weather conditions. He said the government was putting measures in place to prevent food shortages and maintain the stability of prices of essential food commodities.
“We will not allow Kenyans to suffer from hunger because of the current weather conditions,” Kagwe said.
The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting both farmers and consumers as the country responds to the effects of changing weather patterns.
According to the Ministry, last year’s commercial maize harvest reached nearly 70 million 90-kilogram bags. Kagwe said this year’s production had initially shown even greater potential before drought conditions affected several major maize-growing regions.
He expressed confidence that the planned government interventions would help cushion affected farmers, sustain agricultural production and ensure that Kenya remains food secure despite the prevailing climatic challenges.
