The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has withdrawn an application seeking a review of retail electricity tariffs, citing the need to balance the sustainability of the energy sector with consumer protection.

announced the decision at a press briefing at Kawi House, Nairobi, on Wednesday. He explained that the move followed extensive consultations within government and engagements with key stakeholders in the energy sector.

The tariff review application had been submitted by Kenya Power on March 31, 2026, on behalf of the energy sector. However, the government has now opted to halt the process, stating that maintaining current electricity tariffs supports economic growth, safeguards livelihoods, and promotes job creation.

“This decision reflects the need to maintain a sustainable energy sector while protecting households, businesses, and industries from possible cost escalation,” Wandayi said.

He emphasized that any future review of electricity tariffs will strictly follow the procedures outlined in the Energy Act, including the submission of an application, technical evaluation, stakeholder consultations, and public participation before any adjustments can be approved.

“Following the withdrawal of the application, the current retail electricity tariffs shall remain in force and unchanged unless otherwise lawfully reviewed in accordance with the Energy Act and applicable procedures,” Wandayi stated.

The ministry assured the public that the decision will not affect electricity supply or service delivery, and Kenyans will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to power under the current tariff framework.
