Hawkers urged to form Saccos

Hawkers in the County have been told to join Saccos in order to improve their livelihood and standards of living.
Speaking to hawkers recently, Executive in charge of Trade, Co-operatives, Industrialization and Enterprise Funds, Philip Melly urged the hawkers to acquire identity cards so that they can be members of Saccos.
“You need to join Saccos, where all of you will be able to be registered so that you can raise complains and link up with the County Government,” said Melly.
He asked hawkers to operate within the areas where their Saccos are located in order to easily access the management and also resolve any conflicting issues.
“The County Government has set aside loans for hawkers and other groups so that they can improve their livelihoods. We are giving loans to Co-operatives at interest rates as low as 5 per cent,” said Melly.
He disclosed that the County Government is in the process of re-branding all Co-operatives with a view to improving their operations.
“We have embarked on an ambitious programme aimed at making Co-operatives more vibrant. We are aware of the potential this sector has in changing livelihoods and this is why we are keenly monitoring what goes on here and that all members’ funds are put to good use,” said Melly.
