Tea farmers in Kisii County have been urged to embrace modern agricultural practices to improve crop yields and strengthen their household incomes.
Zone 11 Tea Farmers Chairman Ombasa Omweno said the adoption of certified tea seeds and proper farm management techniques is essential for farmers seeking better returns from their labour.
Speaking to farmers in Masaba South Sub‑county, Omweno noted that while the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) continues to support education through scholarships for needy learners, long‑term sustainability depends on farmers increasing productivity on their farms. He said improved farming practices would enable families to meet key expenses such as school fees without financial strain.
Omweno said the organization will continue sensitizing farmers on best practices, including correct fertiliser application, proper nursery management and the appropriate use of farm tools. He warned farmers against intercropping tea with non‑recommended crops, saying such practices weaken tea bushes and reduce output. Only approved tree species used as windbreakers should be planted alongside tea, he said.

Omweno encouraged farmers to take advantage of soft loans offered by KTDA to purchase farm tools and maintain their plantations. He cautioned them against relying on middlemen who buy tea at low prices and resell it at double the value, leaving farmers exploited and underpaid.
Omweno also appealed to parents to spend cautiously during the festive season and prioritize school fees due in January. He urged older students currently on holiday to assist their families with tea picking and deliveries to buying centres instead of engaging in risky activities.
