The Kisumu County Government has announced major reforms aimed at restoring order at the troubled Kibuye open-air market, with officials confirming that leadership positions at the facility will now be filled through appointments rather than elections. Kisumu Central Sub-County Ward Administrator Peter Abiero said the decision is intended to end years of chaos, conflict, and loss of property linked to leadership wrangles at the market.
Speaking in Kisumu during Jamhuri Day celebrations, where he represented Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, Abiero said the county could no longer allow the violent confrontations that have repeatedly erupted as groups fight for control of the market. He noted that the new system will help stabilize operations and ensure traders conduct business in a safe and orderly environment.
Abiero also urged residents to take advantage of the various development projects being implemented by the county government, particularly in the housing sector. He highlighted Anderson Park as one of the flagship projects currently underway, saying it is expected to transform the urban landscape and create new economic opportunities for locals.

Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo echoed the call for residents to appreciate and safeguard ongoing development initiatives. He said the national government is committed to delivering key infrastructure projects in the region, including the long-awaited Koru–Soin Dam and the upgrading of the Mamboleo–Miwani road.
Leparmorijo added that construction of the modern tower at Kisumu International Airport is nearing completion, while the Kabonyo Kanyagwal fisheries project is progressing steadily. He said these projects are expected to boost economic activity, improve service delivery, and create employment for thousands of residents.
The commissioner further noted that the Lumumba affordable housing project is almost complete, with hundreds of youths already benefiting from job opportunities at the site. Similar housing and infrastructure projects are ongoing in Knayakwar and Muhoroni, where many young people have also secured employment. Leparmorijo emphasized that the combined value of these projects runs into billions of shillings, underscoring the government’s commitment to transforming Kisumu County.
