The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a stern reminder that all taxpayers must file their 2025 Income Tax Returns by midnight on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The authority has made it clear that no extension will be granted this year, unlike in 2025 when extra time was allowed due to system congestion.

In a statement released on Saturday, June 27, 2026, KRA urged Kenyans who have not yet filed to act immediately. Officials emphasized that sufficient notice has already been given and taxpayers should not expect leniency.

Last year’s deadline was extended after heavy traffic overwhelmed the iTax system. However, KRA says it has since upgraded its digital infrastructure and expanded support services to ensure smoother operations during this year’s peak filing period.

Taxpayers who fail to meet the deadline will face penalties and interest charges. The law stipulates a fine of Ksh2,000 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher. Additionally, unpaid taxes will attract 1% interest per month, and KRA may issue default assessments that could further increase the final tax bill.

Filing Channels Available

To ease compliance, KRA has provided multiple filing options:

iTax portal (itax.kra.go.ke)

eCitizen platform

*USSD code 222#

WhatsApp support via 0711 999 999

Assistance at Huduma Centres, Service Centres, Ushuru Mashinani offices, and the KRA Contact Centre

Support centres have extended working hours to accommodate the surge in demand. Tax officials continue to advise taxpayers not to wait until the last minute, warning that system traffic may still slow down close to the deadline.

KRA also reminded taxpayers that mistakes in returns can be corrected through the iTax system. Errors such as mismatched income details or incorrect P9 form entries can be fixed by resubmitting updated information. For persistent issues, taxpayers can seek help via phone, email, or walk-in centres.

The filing window, which opened on January 1, 2026, will close strictly on June 30, 2026, at midnight. The directive applies to all individuals with a valid KRA PIN, including salaried employees, business owners, and those filing nil returns.
