Neno Sacco customers urge expansion into domestic tourism to unlock Coast’s untapped potential

Customers using Neno Sacco’s coach and parcel services between the Coast and upcountry counties are urging the management to diversify into tourism‑oriented ventures, saying the move could unlock new opportunities in domestic travel and commerce.

Businesspeople from Mombasa, Ukunda, Kilifi, and Malindi noted that despite Neno Sacco’s reliable fleet of VIP vans and buses suited for tourist movement, the firm has yet to exploit the industry’s vast commercial potential. They argued that linking upcountry towns such as Isiolo, Machakos, and Makueni with Coast resorts would ease travel and accommodation for domestic tourists while boosting the Sacco’s revenue base.

Malindi businessman Bob Ndwiga emphasized that the Coast hosts some of Kenya’s most sought‑after resorts, both locally and internationally, making it imperative for transport firms to consider tourism ventures. He added that attractions along the routes, including Tsavo East and West National Parks, the Seven Folks Dams, and the Mwea Game Reserve, present untapped opportunities for stopovers and wildlife experiences.

Stakeholders also pointed to the need for improved office standards and branding at Neno Sacco’s Coast outlets. They said facilities in towns such as Malindi, Ukunda, and Mombasa should reflect the Sacco’s national image and appeal to both local and international tourists. Comfortable waiting areas, sanitation facilities, and proximity to eateries were cited as essential upgrades.

One frequent traveller between Malindi and Embu noted that while Neno Sacco’s services, vehicles, and disciplined drivers remain commendable, the Malindi office in particular falls short of the image expected in a major tourist destination. Another customer, Moses Njiru, suggested that basic amenities such as running water and proper seating should be prioritised to enhance passenger experience.

Despite being one of the most successful transport cooperatives in the Mount Kenya region, Neno Sacco has yet to venture into domestic tourism. Analysts argue that partnerships with Coast hotels could help fill empty beds left in the wake of declining international arrivals, particularly after the COVID‑19 pandemic forced many Italian investors to scale back operations.

Hoteliers in Malindi say they have reduced accommodation prices to attract local tourists, but travel firms have not capitalized on the offers. Customers believe that if Neno Sacco embraces tourism, it could help dispel the perception among upcountry residents that Coast resorts are reserved for foreigners, thereby expanding domestic tourism.
