President William Ruto has appointed Henry Gichuhi Kinyua as the new Non-Executive Chairperson of the Coffee Board of Kenya, effective September 4, 2026.
According to Gazette Notice No. 14143, the appointment was made under Section 7 (1) (a) of the Coffee Act (No. 8 of 2026). Kinyua will serve a three-year term at the helm of the board, which regulates and promotes Kenya’s coffee industry.
The Coffee Board of Kenya was revived after the Coffee Act 2023 came into force, restoring the regulator’s oversight role in the sector following years of reform in coffee marketing and milling.
Kinyua is a familiar face in Kenya’s coffee industry, with more than two decades of experience in agricultural policy and coffee sector strategy across Kenya and East Africa.

He previously served as Nyeri County’s Agriculture Executive, a role in which he championed reforms for smallholder coffee and tea farmers. In December 2019, he was appointed Chairperson of the New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (KPCU) board by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he steered efforts to revive the once-dominant coffee miller through the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund and modernised, technology-driven reforms.
Beyond national roles, Kinyua has worked as National Programme Coordinator for the ACTS Programme at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), advising on crops and agricultural value chains.
He holds a background from Harvard Kennedy School and is a regular commentator on coffee markets.
