Efforts to boost coffee farming in Nyamira County have received a significant push following a strategic collaboration between New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (New KPCU) and the County Government.
Speaking during a sensitization session was held on July 30, 2025, Nyamira County Agriculture Officers, led by Dr. Peris Oroko, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock, and Dr. Evans Maina, CEC for Trade and Cooperatives said the meeting focused on enhancing the uptake of New KPCU’s programs among local farmers, with special emphasis on the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund (CCARF).
Despite being a key government initiative aimed at providing farmers with affordable advances on their coffee produce, the fund has faced low uptake in Nyamira, raising concerns over its reach and impact at the grassroots.
During the session, key challenges hindering the success of the program were highlighted. These included inadequate sensitization of farmers at the grassroots level, limited involvement of the county government in the implementation of New KPCU programs, and persistently low coffee productivity across the region.

In addressing these concerns, the County Government assured New KPCU of its full support and commitment to working collaboratively to revitalize the coffee sector in Nyamira. The leadership emphasized the need for deeper engagements, community awareness campaigns and targeted interventions to increase coffee yields and farmer participation.
New KPCU reiterated its mandate to support coffee farmers through capacity building, financial advances, and value chain enhancements. The union affirmed that addressing bottlenecks in information dissemination and fostering county-level partnerships would be central to achieving sustainable results.
The collaboration aims to empower coffee farmers in Nyamira by equipping them with the necessary resources, knowledge, and financial support to increase productivity. By restoring confidence in coffee farming, both New KPCU and Nyamira County envision reviving the sector’s contribution to local economic growth and improving the livelihoods of farming households.
This initiative marks a critical step towards restoring Nyamira’s coffee industry, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years. Through strengthened partnerships, there is renewed hope that coffee will once again become a source of pride and prosperity for the county’s farmers.
