Nyeri governor pledges to revitalize co-ops

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has pledged to revitalize the co-operative sector in the county.
The Governor said his Government will employ more staff in co-operative department to fast-track inspection of all co-operatives.
“Co-operatives are essential in our county economy and we are committed to promoting good governance in all societies,” said the Governor. “Some co-operatives have had management problems especially agriculture-based societies.”
He spoke during NewFortis Sacco AGM and asked saccos to bring on board young people by offering innovative products and services.
He said saccos stand a better chance of growth if they incorporated the use of information and communication technology.
He noted 40 per cent of Nyeri residents were co-operators and had greatly benefited in strengthening their economic well-being.
“Co-operatives have played a major role in elevating living standards. Our aim is to have more people join the movement as this will greatly help in reducing poverty,” said the governor.
“The Governor said the county will distribute fruit trees worth Sh 34 million to county farmers.
