Commissioner for Cooperatives Development David Obonyo has commended Muungano Women Group Housing Cooperative for playing a key role in offering affordable housing in line with the Bottom up Economic Transformational Agenda (BETA).
Represented by Morris Mworia from his office, the commissioner lauded the cooperative for empowering women and cooperatives in general for playing a significant role in supplementing the government’s role in achieving the affordable housing agenda.
He assured cooperators that the government will continue to create an enabling environment for sustainable growth of cooperatives and the development of the sector.
The cooperative’s chairperson Ruth Wakapa said the Sacco is planning to buy a new building worth Ksh 40 million.
“We have raised Ksh 10 million and are now seeking a loan from Kingdom Bank,” she said.
During the event, the Cooperative’s borrowing powers was approved due to its good performance and management.
Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo commended the women for maintaining the cooperative for over 30 years.
Ngogoyo, who is the patron of the cooperative, said he will mobilize resources in support of the cooperative.
Kajiado County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Cooperatives, Culture, Tourism and Wildlife Janet Sereu challenged the youth to join cooperatives which play a big role in poverty alleviation.
The CECM noted that the county government will distribute funds through groups and Saccos to support them start essential projects to improve livelihoods.
