Principal Secretary State Department for Agriculture, Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh has called for stronger regulatory frameworks to eliminate tea hacking and illegal trade practices.

The PS  spoke when he led the Ministry’s representation in Mombasa during a critical submission to the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Livestock, chaired by Dr. John Mutunga, on the Tea Bill currently under review.

Dr Ronoh stressed the need for stringent guidelines on the establishment of new factories to prevent market oversupply and ensure the viability of existing operations.

The discussions focused on transformative reforms aimed at repositioning Kenya’s tea industry for sustainable growth and increased farmer prosperity.

The leaders advocated for tea factories to engage in direct sales to improve price transparency and deliver better returns to farmers.

Enhancing value addition within the sector was emphasized as a strategic move to boost product competitiveness both locally and internationally.

Tea Bill currently under review proposals include structured support for e-commerce platforms and Digital Sales Operations (DSO) to modernize trade channels.

Additionally, a key highlight was the proposed strategic utilization of tea levy funds to upgrade agricultural access roads, critical infrastructure that directly supports farmer mobility and supply chain efficiency.
