Rabai youth and women urged to embrace Saccos for growth and prosperity

Youth and women in Rabai Sub-County, Kilifi, have been called upon to strengthen cooperation and embrace the formation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (Saccos) as a pathway to economic empowerment and sustainable development.

Speaking recently, in Rabai, the newly appointed Sub-County Cooperative Officer, Mr. Raphael Barawa, underscored the importance of cultivating a strong saving culture among residents. He noted that consistent savings would enable members to access larger loans, which could, in turn, finance personal and community development projects.

Mr. Barawa expressed concern over the slow pace at which the youth and women in the area are organizing themselves into Saccos. He warned that without collective financial structures, residents risk falling behind in development. “Many young people and women spend time idling in the streets instead of coming together to form Saccos that can uplift their living standards,” he lamented.

Highlighting success stories from across the country, Mr. Barawa emphasized that numerous Kenyans have implemented major projects through loans secured from their cooperative societies. He urged Rabai residents to follow suit by joining existing Saccos in large numbers and investing actively to secure their future.

“It is only through joining Saccos that life can change forever,” he said, stressing that cooperative membership offers stability and prosperity.

The Cooperative Officer also called on Sacco leaders in the region to uphold high standards of governance. He insisted that transparency, accountability, integrity, and honesty must be the guiding principles if Saccos are to win the trust of the communities they serve.

“The cooperative movement plays an important role in uplifting the living standards of people in this country,” Mr. Barawa noted, adding that effective leadership and good governance are essential for the sector’s success.
