- KTDA tea factories secure strong returns at the Mombasa auction
- Farmers benefit as tea prices remain firm amid reduced volumes
- Fertiliser availability raises hopes for improved production next year
Tea smallholders under the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) earned Ksh 914,424,196.14 at the Mombasa auction this week.
The factories sold 2,596,542 kg of tea at the sale.
According to the Eastern Africa Tea Trade Association (EATTA), Mununga led with Ksh 456.66 ($3.54) per kg. Imenti followed at Ksh 447.63 ($3.47) per kg. Rukuriri achieved Ksh 434.73 ($3.37) per kg, while Gathuthi got Ksh 432.15 ($3.35) per kg.
KTDA Holding National Chairman Enos Njeru said the arrival of fertiliser has encouraged farmers to apply it. As a result, the focus is now on a bigger harvest in the coming year.
“With the reduced tea at the auction, the price of the commodity has been impressive as our 800,000 farmers are educated on the plucking of the quality green leaf,” said Mr Njeru.

Meanwhile, EATTA Managing Director George Omuga said 5,922,496 kg of made tea were traded during the week. Rwanda achieved the best price at Ksh 417.96 ($3.24) per kg. Kenya followed at $2.33 per kg.
“Kenya sold 4,792,228 kg, sourced from KTDA factories and the independent producers, Uganda 838,446 kg, Rwanda 277,000 kg and Burundi 14,732 kg,” he said.
