The Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives has finalized its review of a report on the input of the public on the Business Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The Committee, chaired by Embakasi North MP James Gakuya examined the report a day after concluding a three-day public participation exercise.
The Bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), proposes amendments to several business-related laws.
Public views was gathered on key statutes, including the Standards Act (Cap. 496), Kenya Accreditation Service Act (Cap. 496A), and Scrap Metal Act (Cap. 503).
Other laws subjected to Public Participation include the Special Economic Zones Act (Cap. 517A), Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute Act (Cap. 511A), and the National Electronic Single Window System Act (Cap. 485D).
Stakeholders from the trade sub- sector broadly supported the proposed changes, with some suggesting additional improvements.
Later, the Committee also met with Principal Secretary for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Susan Mang’eni.
She submitted the input of her State Department on the Startup Bill, 2022, sponsored by Nominated Senator Crystal Asige.
The Bill aims to promote sustainable technological development, entrepreneurship, innovation, and attract Kenyan talent and capital.
PS Mang’eni recommended amendments to the Bill, arguing that its current focus on innovation lacks a clear framework for commercializing these innovations.
