Why Kisumu City manager ordered PSVs out of petrol stations

Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga has ordered all Public Services Vehicles (PSVs) operating and has offices within petrol stations, to cease their operations in such places effective March 10, 2024.

In a signed Statutory Public Notice, Wanga said the move is one of the ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and orderliness of public transport within Kisumu City.

“Effective from the March 10, 2024 all petrol stations within Kisumu City which currently act as offices for PSVs are hereby instructed to cease this practice immediately” he ordered.

He added that the directive applies to establishments such as National Oil (opposite Kisumu School), Bach Petrol (along Obote Road), Wells Petrol (Opposite Kisumu Girls) and any other petrol station which operates as a booking office for PSVs.

“Furthermore , it is imperative to note that the only designated bus parks within Kisumu City are the Main Bus Park and Mowlem Bus Park,”  notice reads further.

He added that any PSV stages established outside of the designated areas including but not limited to Ahero- Mowuok (opposite Aga Khan Hospital) and along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road are considered illegal and will not be tolerated. “All PSV operators are hereby advised to secure a spot within the designated bus parks by the stipulated deadline of the and failure to comply with the directive will result to strict enforcement measures and violators of this notice will be apprehended and appropriate legal action will be taken against them.”

The reorganisation initiative is aimed at streamlining public transport operations, enhance commuter safety and ensure the smooth flow of traffic within the Lakeside City.
