MPs to kick off nationwide public hearings on Cooperatives Bill next week

The National Assembly has announced dates for of public hearings on the Cooperatives Bill 2024, (National Assembly Bill No. 7 of 2024) urging members of the public to turn out to give views.

Hearings will take place in 8 counties on May 7-11, 2024. On May 7, 2024 hearings will hold in Siaya at IEBC Social Hall and on May 8, the proceedings head to Vihiga Friends Resource Centre, Vihiga County. Then following day, hearings will take place at Kericho Social Hall.

In Mombasa County, it will be held in Tononoka Social Hall on May 11 then in Machakos Social Hall in Machakos County on May 7, 2024 from 10am, Kirinyaga County in Baricho Social Hall on May 8, 2024, Isiolo Town Catholic Church Social Hall in Isiolo on May 9 and Garissa Social Hall at Garissa County on May 11.

Copies of the bill are available at the National Assembly building or their website www.parliament.co.ke

The bill was read first time on Tuesday April 9, 2024 and committed to the Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.

The bill, sponsored by Leader of Majority Party Kimani Ichung’wah seeks to provide for socio- economic development in devolved system governance.

The bill also seeks to provide for matters relating to the promotion, constitution, registration and regulation of cooperatives and to give effect to Article 186 of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Kenya.

The bill as well roots for establishment of the office of the County Director of Cooperatives at the County Government level and to provide for inter-governmental cooperative relations.
