This year’s Ushirika Day, also known as International Co-operatives Day will be celebrated on July 6 at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) grounds.
The theme of this year’s celebrations is “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All”. This year will be the 102 Ushirika Day. International Co-operatives Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July.
The theme aligns with the objectives of the upcoming UN Summit of the Future whose theme is “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow” which will take place in September 22 to 23 in New York.
The summit aims to reaffirm commitments to global cooperation, sustainable development as well addressing pressing challenges. The event also strives to accelerate progress across various domains, including climate action, poverty eradication and social equity.

During Ushirika Day Celebrations in Kenya, various activities take place including; theme discussions, awards and recognitions and cultural performances. There are also awareness campaigns and blood donation drives during the celebrations.
Last year’s Ushirika Day, was on July 1 at KICC. The event was themed “Cooperatives for Sustainable Development”. President Ruto was the chief guest.
Since 1923, cooperatives worldwide have observed this day to recognize their role in building a more sustainable future. The event also aims to raise awareness about cooperatives, the principles of the movement and the dedication of cooperatives to building a just future for everyone.
