The County Government of Embu is championing a culture of savings and investment among its citizens to foster economic growth and empowerment at the grassroots level, this is evident by the recent Embu Bodaboda Summit and the launch of a strategic plan for the riders.

During the summit, Governor Cecily Mbarire urged riders to join and expand their sub-county Boda Boda Saccos (Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies). This initiative is a direct call to action for riders to embrace a savings culture, which the Governor described as essential for “genuine empowerment”.

The strategy is intended to break the cycle of riders being exploited during political campaigns and then being abandoned afterward, ensuring long-term financial stability and self-sufficiency.

This focus on cooperative empowerment is part of a wider strategy of strategic partnerships and investments that the county is undertaking.

According to Governor Mbarire, Embu County is working with various donor agencies and organizations to implement a range of development projects. These include significant initiatives like the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP), which is a Slum Upgrading Program aimed at improving living conditions for residents.

She further stated that the county has partnered with the UN FAO on a Digital Land Governance program and is working with GIZ on the COMSSA program to enhance climate resilience in municipalities.

A major investment also includes a partnership with a Chinese company to develop a Smart Container Market. These projects align with the county’s goal to strengthen institutional capacities and drive prosperity and social transformation.

The county’s own source revenue (OSR) has also seen a significant increase, from Ksh394, 540,728 in the 2021/22 financial year to Ksh916, 779,467 projected for 2024/25, this highlights a trajectory of revenue growth that supports these ambitious projects.
