Bungoma County has reaffirmed its place as one of Kenya’s leading lights in the cooperative movement, Governor Kenneth Lusaka has said.
Speaking in Nairobi during a preparatory meeting ahead of the upcoming National Co-operative Conference to be held in Kisumu, Lusaka said his administration remains committed to strengthening the co-operative sector as a key pillar of economic growth and community empowerment.
“Bungoma remains a leader in the co-operative movement,” he said. “We are focused on supporting existing societies and creating new partnerships to make co-operatives more vibrant and sustainable.”
The Governor lauded the decision to host the national event in the Lake Region, describing it as a strategic move that reflects the area’s strong agricultural foundation and potential for collective progress.
“The region’s strength lies in agriculture. Through co-operatives, individual struggles can be turned into shared prosperity,” Lusaka added.
The meeting, chaired by Co-operatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) chair and Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, brought together county leaders and key sector players to review preparations for the national event.

CS Oparanya described Kisumu as a fitting venue for the conference, noting that the region’s vibrant agro-economy provides the perfect backdrop for discussions on the future of co-operatives in Kenya.
“Bringing the co-operative conference to the Lake Region is timely. It places our productive communities at the centre of Kenya’s economic agenda,” Oparanya said.
Governor Nyong’o, on his part, welcomed the opportunity, saying Kisumu is ready to host the high-profile gathering that will attract co-operative leaders, policymakers, and grassroots representatives from across the country.
The National Co-operative Conference is expected to focus on value addition, innovation, and community-based economic empowerment, with the aim of revitalizing the movement and promoting inclusive growth.
Lusaka’s remarks come at a time when counties are seeking to leverage co-operatives as engines of local development, job creation, and wealth distribution. Bungoma, with its thriving network of agricultural and savings co-operatives, continues to stand out as a model of resilience and enterprise in the national co-operative landscape.
