Kilifi County residents have been urged to embrace the 32 registered Cooperative Societies to jumpstart their development and elevate the living standards in the County.

Ganze Sub County Cooperative Officer, Maureen Mapenzi, talking to Sacco Review in her office said that the Cooperative Development Ministry officials registered a total 32 Cooperative societies between last year and this year, expanding the saving activities in the County.

“Out of the 32 registered cooperative societies, 18 cooperative societies are active, while 14 Cooperative societies are dormant,” she explained.

The Sub County Cooperative Officer, however said that although some 32 Saccos have already been registered in the area there is still more room for registration of other societies.

Additionally, she advised Saccos in the sub county to embrace good leadership and good governance for effective operations. “Poor leadership and governance in Saccos would lead to the withdrawal of members and decline of liquidity flow,” She said

She further urged Sacco members in the area to remain united and patronize their Saccos to enable them offer quality services to them.

She also asked the Sacco members in the area to cooperate fully by ensuring that they develop a saving culture rather than a consuming one to enable them get bigger loans at the end of the transaction period to accomplish their personal development projects.

“Consuming culture would lead you to great losses,” Mapenzi said

Turning to loans, Mapenzi further advised members to borrow wisely and repay them promptly so as to enable others to benefit from the same loan products.

However, she urged them to use the loans for the intended purposes only, not diverting to other unplanned uses.

About defaulting, the Sub County Cooperative Officer told members to strictly avoid defaulting, noting that the vice has led to the collapse of many Saccos in the country.

At the same time, she advised Women and Youth in the sub county to come forward and form Saccos to improve their economic status, hence live a better life.

Mapenzi, further asked residents who have not joined Saccos to do so immediately and invest heavily to enable them to get better returns at the end of the transaction period to implement their development projects.

“The Cooperative Movement plays a vital role in the country, that of uplifting living standards of people”. She noted.
