Machogu urges youth to join SACCOs for financial security and national growth

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has called on school leavers and university graduates to embrace Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) as a pathway to financial stability and empowerment.

Speaking during a youth empowerment forum hosted by the Kisii Youth Bunge Sacco, Machogu said young people must harness their education, creativity, and talents to seize opportunities in an increasingly competitive economy.

He challenged the long‑held narrative that youth are “leaders of tomorrow,” insisting that they should instead be empowered to become active builders of the nation today. “We should empower our children with opportunities and freedom of expression to enable them to be active builders of this country,” Machogu said, urging young people to create their own opportunities rather than wait for others to provide them.

Turning to financial inclusion, Machogu encouraged young people to join SACCOs in large numbers to access affordable loans for personal development. He warned against destructive behaviours such as drug abuse and early marriages, saying SACCOs offer a constructive alternative by opening doors to entrepreneurship and self‑reliance.

The former CS praised the leadership of the Kisii Youth Bunge Sacco for its prudent financial management, describing it as a model for other cooperatives. He singled out chairperson Asha Moronya and officials, including Dennis Orioki, for steering the Sacco toward growth and stability, enabling it to rise above financial mediocrity.

The event drew youth from across the region, who shared experiences and ideas on how to contribute to national development.
