Busia police and Kenya Sugar Board officials intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting contraband sugar and milk during a routine patrol on Amoni–Works Road.
The National Police Service reported on X (formerly Twitter) that officers seized several sacks of sugar and cartons of suspected illicit milk, believed to be smuggled from Uganda, during a vehicle search. Upon being intercepted, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot to evade arrest.
“A search conducted on the vehicle led to the recovery of several sacks of sugar, along with several cartons of suspected contraband milk believed to have originated from Uganda. Upon interception, the driver of the said motor vehicle abandoned it and escaped on foot, evading arrest,” read part of the statement.
The post states that the vehicle and seized goods are currently held at the Busia Police Station. Authorities are investigating the ownership of the contraband and searching for the suspect who fled the scene.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish ownership of the recovered goods and to apprehend the suspect who fled from the scene,” reads the post.

The post also notes that the National Police Service has stepped up monitoring and enforcement. Their goals are to protect consumers, support legal businesses, and stop smuggling and illegal border trade that hurts the local economy.
“The National Police Service has intensified surveillance and enforcement measures aimed at safeguarding consumers, protecting legitimate trade, and curbing illicit cross-border activities that undermine the local economy,” reads the X post.
This follows a multi-agency operation 12 days ago along the Busia–Kisumu Highway, where authorities seized contraband alcohol and suspected narcotics during a routine security check.
