Matungulu West Ward MCA Raphael Nzau, has encouraged boda boda operators in Machakos County to enrol in technical and vocational training institutions, saying additional skills will secure their future beyond motorcycle transport.

Addressing riders in the Koma area, Nzau urged them to take advantage of nearby technical institutes and invest part of their earnings in education. He emphasized that boda boda riding should not be seen as a lifelong career, stressing the importance of preparing for the future through skills development.

“You cannot be a boda boda rider all your life. We have a technical institute nearby, and I encourage you to enrol in a course of your choice. Use part of your income to pay school fees and equip yourself with technical skills that will open up more opportunities,” he said.

The MCA noted that many riders joined the sector after being unable to continue with their studies, but reminded them that it is never too late to pursue education and improve their prospects. “I know most of you ventured into this business because you could not continue with your studies. I know it is sustainable but do not lose focus. It is never too late to gain new skills and improve your future,” he added.

Nzau also revealed that, in partnership with Katine Technical Institute, plans are underway to construct a boda boda shed in the area to provide riders with shelter from the sun and rain.
