Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) John Mbadi has credited government reforms in the sugar industry with reviving local production, describing the gains as a sign of progress in the sector.

Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday, July 1, Mbadi said the reforms introduced by the administration have already led to a significant increase in sugar output.

“The efforts and reforms that we are putting into the sugar industry have led to an increase in production.”

The CS emphasized that the next step should be reinforcing these gains through policies that lower the cost of locally produced sugar for consumers while protecting farmers and millers from unfair competition posed by cheap imports. “We therefore need to encourage more sugar production by making our sugar cheaper and not allowing cheap sugar to flood our market,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when the government is defending its economic performance amid public concern over the high cost of living, taxation, rising debt, and stagnant household incomes. Mbadi insisted that the administration remains committed to boosting local sugar production while ensuring imports do not undermine the domestic industry.

Beyond sugar, Mbadi highlighted government programmes designed to support small businesses. He cited initiatives such as the Nyota Programme, the Hustler Fund, and affordable bank loans, which he said are helping entrepreneurs access credit and expand their ventures. “There are a lot of initiatives that this government has come up to support small businesses,” Mbadi added.
