Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been urged to adopt green energy solutions as a way of reducing operating costs, improving productivity and increasing profitability.
Industry stakeholders at an energy forum in Machakos County said increased use of renewable energy among SMEs could help address rising production costs while improving the reliability of electricity supply.
Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti said decentralised renewable energy could provide SMEs with a more stable and affordable source of power, enabling them to focus on expanding their businesses and creating jobs.
“Decentralised green energy solutions such as rooftop solar installations and localised mini-grids provide affordable, predictable and uninterrupted power. This stability enables small businesses to lower overheads, improve profit margins, scale production, and create local employment opportunities,” said Ndeti.
The Governor was speaking during an event marking the 10th anniversary of Safer Power Group in Machakos, where stakeholders discussed the role of clean energy in strengthening local industries.

Ndeti noted that energy costs are among the major expenses faced by micro and small manufacturers, making renewable energy an important option for businesses seeking to remain competitive.

She said unreliable power supply and increasing energy costs can affect production schedules, raise the cost of goods and limit the ability of SMEs to expand. Investing in solar and other renewable energy technologies, she added, could help businesses achieve greater control over their energy expenses.
The push for green energy also comes as businesses seek alternatives that can support long-term growth while reducing their environmental impact.

Stakeholders said converting renewable electricity into high-value products could help address Africa’s energy challenges while ensuring manufacturing activities and employment opportunities remain within local communities.
For SMEs, the transition to clean energy is increasingly being viewed not only as an environmental responsibility but also as a business strategy that can reduce overheads, strengthen operations and create room for expansion.
The Machakos forum was framed around a decade of innovation in green industry and clean energy, with stakeholders calling for greater investment in renewable solutions to advance industrial competitiveness and sustainability.
