Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has led a sensitisation campaign for Shirikiana Sacco in Bungoma County, as part of efforts to promote financial inclusion and strengthen household economic resilience.
Oparanya said the Sacco sensitisation exercise held on Wednesday, September 2, brought together delegates from several constituencies and sub-counties across the county, as the government seeks to encourage Kenyans to embrace a culture of saving, investment and responsible borrowing.
Speaking during the sessions at Busakala Friends Church, Kipsenoi SDA Church and St. Crispinus ACK Church in Bungoma Town, Oparanya said Shirikiana Sacco would provide members with access to affordable financial services while supporting investment in productive enterprises.
He said the Sacco would initially focus on coffee and other agricultural value chains, providing farmers and other members with an avenue to mobilise savings and access financial support to improve their livelihoods.

Beyond financial services, Oparanya said Shirikiana Sacco would offer social protection products targeting key household needs, including education, healthcare and final expenses. The products will include support for school fees, Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions for members and their dependants, as well as last-expense support.
“Economic empowerment begins with what we do at the household and community levels,” Oparanya said.
The CS said the initiative forms part of broader government efforts to create economic opportunities through investments in agriculture, healthcare, affordable housing, MSMEs, technology and innovation.
He noted that small businesses require improved access to capital, markets and information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance their growth and sustainability.
Oparanya also highlighted the digital-first model being adopted by Shirikiana Sacco, saying members would be able to access services conveniently through a partnership with Safaricom.
He urged more residents across the Western Corridor to join the Sacco, saying financial inclusion, productive investment and sustainable livelihoods were key to lifting households out of poverty.
