African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) Executive Director George Ombado has been honored as one of the recipients of the 2025 Maurice R. Smith Leadership Award by the African-American Credit Union Coalition.
He received the award 2025 African-American Credit Union Coalition Annual Conference on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Georgia – USA.
Ombado has been advancing financial inclusion across Africa and beyond, he continues to exemplify unselfish wisdom and a strong, rare sense of pure ethics and honorable humility.
The achievement is not just a personal victory but rather a collective triumph for the Cooperative movement in Africa, reflecting the power of purpose-driven leadership and community impact.
While serving as the Executive Director of ACCOSCA, Ombado ’s visionary work builds bridges across cultures and continents, closing gender gaps and strengthening good governance, fostering sustainable cooperative development with purpose and impact, while motivating cooperators across Africa to reach their full potential.

Ombado’s leadership spans the globe; he serves on the World Council of Credit Unions Board, is Treasurer of the Cadasta Foundation (Washington, DC), a Board Member of the Africa Co-operative Development Foundation (ACDF), and chairs the Proxfin Network Management Committee (Canada) and is also an African American Credit Union Hall of Fame Alumnus.
The Maurice R. Smith Award, formerly the DEI Trailblazers Award, celebrates individuals who demonstrate outstanding thought leadership in Diversity, Equity, and inclusion; a deep commitment to engaging others in DEI work; and significant social impact across the credit union movement.
