Women entrepreneurs in Busia County have received a significant boost through a new economic empowerment program aimed at enhancing their skills in entrepreneurship and financial management.
The initiative, launched this week, is a partnership between the County Government of Busia, Stanbic Bank Foundation, and Kenya Industrial Estates.
It targets women in micro and small enterprises, particularly those who are financially excluded, with the goal of transitioning them into formal lending systems.
Speaking during the launch, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Investments, Industries, Cooperatives, and SMEs, Omuse Olakachuna, underscored the importance of cultivating a savings culture and improving financial literacy among women in business.
“This training is not just about access to credit, but also about equipping our women with the knowledge to manage and grow their businesses sustainably,” said Olakachuna.

He added that 35 cooperative societies across the county would play a central role in driving economic development through SACCO leadership training.
The program is part of a broader national initiative by the Stanbic Bank Foundation, which aims to empower 5 million women across Kenya over the next seven years. The Foundation’s representatives noted that the program is designed to address key barriers faced by women in business, including lack of collateral, limited access to credit, and information gaps.
Through Kenya Industrial Estates, the training will be rolled out to local markets across Busia County. It is expected to promote financial discipline, encourage savings through chamas, and provide access to digital financial services.
Stanbic Bank Foundation’s Brand Marketing Lead Victoria Mwanzia, Busia Branch Manager Eugene Karani, CECM for Sports Paul Olung’a, and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Busia Chapter Chairperson Mr. Silvanus Abungu were among the dignitaries present during the launch.
