Cane farmers across Kenya have commended President William Ruto for his commitment to revamping the sugar sector, noting that his reforms are already bearing fruit.
Led by Kenya National Federation of Sugar Cane Farmers Secretary General Killion Osur Anyango, the farmers said the president’s initiatives must be supported by other industry players to ensure smooth implementation. Speaking in Kisumu, Anyango pointed to the recently enacted Sugar Act and accompanying legislation as a major step toward revitalising the sector.
He highlighted reforms such as the establishment of the Kenya Sugar Board (KSB), the introduction of a sugar levy, and enhanced research as key benefits of the new law. According to him, the creation of the KSB was long overdue and will provide farmers with access to the 40 per cent sugar levy and other entitlements.

Anyango, however, urged the president to intensify the fight against cartels determined to undermine progress. He accused the groups of funding court cases aimed at derailing scheduled KSB elections for selfish interests. “The petitioners are not even farmers in the first place,” he said, warning that demonstrations could be organised if the cartels persist.
He stressed that farmers are not concerned with boundary disputes, insisting that such matters should be addressed through Parliament rather than the courts. Anyango added that cartels are using litigation as a tool to frustrate government efforts to stabilise the sugar industry.
Meanwhile, he lauded KSB Chief Executive Officer Jude Chesire on his election as head of the International Sugar Organization, saying the appointment will benefit Kenyan farmers by raising the country’s profile in the global sugar market.
