Tala CBO eyes micro-finance transformation to empower community

Nicholas Kyalo, Upper Manza Focus CBO Chairman

Upper Manza Focus Community-Based Organization in Tala has announced plans to transform into a micro‑finance institution by 2026, a move aimed at shielding members from predatory loans and creating new growth opportunities.

The CBO, which has steadily expanded its membership over the years, currently operates through table banking, offering loans to members. Chairman Nicholas Kyalo said the initiative has already enabled the group to invest in land and housing projects, but the ultimate goal is to establish a fully fledged micro‑finance institution. “We started as a table banking group, but now many people have joined, and we are giving out loans to members. Because of the numbers, we are able to buy land and housing property. At the end, we would like to have a microfinance that will be a game-changer. That will be our goal in 2026,” he explained.

Kyalo added that the organization intends to diversify further by setting up a computer training centre and partnering with stakeholders to support youth career development. He emphasized that young people need guidance on education, career pathways and general well-being to avoid social vices and become productive members of society.

He clarified that the CBO does not view itself as competing with the government but rather as a partner in improving community welfare. “We are keen on working with the government to uplift our people,” he noted.

The chairman also highlighted projects already implemented by the organization, including the installation of water tanks and equipping a borehole with solar panels for Sh1.4 million. These initiatives, he said, demonstrate the group’s commitment to improving livelihoods while laying the foundation for future expansion.
