Detectives have arrested a prime suspect and recovered a significant cache of stolen coffee following a series of theft incidents reported in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.
The crime wave peaked on the night of November 25, 2025, when a gang of about 50 armed thugs stormed Sowek Kenya Company Limited in Waitakuk.
The gang allegedly cut through a barbed wire fence, tied up two security guards, assaulted them, and made away with their phones along with nine beds of drying coffee.
Just a day earlier, a similarly brazen break-in was reported at the Kiungani Coffee Growers Cooperative Society. Armed men are said to have dug through a brick wall to access the parchment drying section, escaping with an estimated 25 bags of P1 coffee parchment, each weighing 50 kilograms.
Following investigations, detectives apprehended the key suspect, who is alleged to have been buying coffee from questionable sources without authorisation.
During the arrest, officers reportedly found 18 bags of coffee beans weighing about 1,800 kg in his possession. Five of the bags, weighing roughly 500 kg, were hidden inside his house, while the remaining 13 bags (approximately 1,300 kg) were discovered drying in the sun outside.
The suspect is currently being held at Kiminini Police Station, where the recovered coffee has also been secured. Authorities say preparations are underway to arraign him as investigations continue.
