Gov’t to equip new Tea Research Institute in Kipkelion to enhance research in the region

Principal Secretary State Department for Agriculture, Dr Kipronoh Ronoh has said the government will equip the newly completed tea research facility in Kipkelion East Sub-County to boost research in the sector.

The PS who also flagged off the distribution of 400,000 certified tea seedlings to farmers in the country reaffirmed government commitment to equipping the newly completed research facility to ensure Kenya remains a global leader in tea innovation.

The advanced unit will support world class research capable of resolving persistent sub-sector issues, including combating threats such as the tea mosquito.

The Tea Research Institute (TRI) remains a vital pillar in sustaining and revolutionizing Kenya’s tea industry.

It is uniquely positioned to address the global oversupply of tea, while elevating foreign exchange earnings and reinforcing the Government agenda through job creation, hunger eradication, and export promotion.

The government is firmly focused on revitalizing the tea sector by tackling critical challenges such as improving tea prices, eliminating burdensome taxation, expanding market access, and modernizing 19 legacy factories west of the Rift Valley, an investment totaling Ksh3.5 billion.

The PS  noted that collaboration with multinational tea companies will be intensified to unlock employment opportunities for the youth and expand the value chain through inclusive growth and sustainability.
