Kakamega County celebrated this year’s world Cooperative Day with speakers making passionate calls to the Sacco management to focus on improving the lives of their members.
Speaking during the occasion, chief guest Recheal Okumu underscored the need of Sacco management to invest in human resources so that they can have managers who are efficient and effective for members to reap maximum returns on their investments.
She said the main reason why people join Saccos is to help them change their lives.
Okumu argued that the Sacco managers should observe integrity and make sure they keep proper records to keep track of performance, noting that Saccos collapse because of unethical practices, selfishness and cheap politics.
Okumu, who was representing the county boss Wycliffe Oparanya, said Sacco management teams must learn how to bring youth on board early enough so that they learn the ropes to ensure smooth takeovers in case of retirement.
Okumu, who is also Kakamega CECM for Public Service, said the county has the interest of Saccos at heart, hence the Ksh20,000,000 grants the county gives to rural Saccos to improve their livelihoods.
Also present was the CECM for Agriculture and Cooperatives Mr Geoffrey Mulayi and Kakamega County Cooperative Director Benson Kangale, among others.
