Kenyan businesses urged to move beyond AI experimentation

  • Kenyan firms are being urged to make AI a core business tool rather than a side experiment.
  • Experts say businesses must show clear returns from their AI investments.
  • Automation is already helping firms streamline routine tasks and free employees for other work.

Kenyan companies are being pushed to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) as a core part of their operations rather than treating it as a side experiment, industry experts say, warning that firms which delay could lose ground as the technology reshapes workplaces.

Speaking on the growing role of AI in business, experts noted that most Kenyan companies already use the technology in some form, but questioned whether that use is translating into real value.

“All companies are using AI in one way or another,” one industry expert said, adding that the key question is whether firms are using it merely to draft emails faster or to genuinely increase value for the business and its customers. Companies investing capital in AI, the expert said, should expect to see a measurable return on that investment.

Another expert pointed to practical applications already reshaping day-to-day work, including automating outgoing emails, summarising correspondence and streamlining routine organisational tasks. Rather than eliminating jobs, the expert said, AI is freeing up employees’ time for other responsibilities.

A third contributor described AI adoption as a growing boardroom priority, noting that chief executives are increasingly grappling with whether and how to integrate the technology into their organisations. Conversations with CEOs, the expert said, have centred on two core questions: whether AI is something businesses need to engage with, and where that engagement should begin.
