The County Government of Kisumu is planning to review and strengthen laws governing mining and quarying activities as well as establishing clear demarcations of commercial quarries including fencing and proper sealing of hazardous sites.
This was said by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili during a multi-agency Committee meeting aimed at strengthening the County’s emergency response.
Owili said the County Government had already taken decisive action by banning all mining licenses and halting quarrying activities across the County.

He also said that the county will rehabilitate abandoned quarries across the county and establish a task force to oversee and regulate all mining activities.
“We will fast-track the resolution of stalled and ongoing land dispute cases in the county to prevent encroachment & illegal mining,” he added.
This follows after a family in Obunga lost four sons, who drowned in an open quarry in Kanyakwar.
