- The conference will focus on expanding affordable housing finance, especially for informal workers and Sacco members.
- Stakeholders will discuss blended finance, land reforms, green housing and technology in the housing sector.
The Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC) will convene the fifth Kenya Affordable Housing Conference (KAHC) from August 20 to 21, 2026, at Lake Naivasha Resort in Nakuru County, under the theme “Scaling the Base: Unlocking Inclusive and Sustainable Housing Solutions.”
KMRC CEO and Managing Director Johnstone Oltetia said this year’s conference addresses what he called the “twin gaps” limiting access to housing at scale: a shortfall of affordable units on the supply side, and millions of Kenyans locked out of housing finance on the demand side due to informal or irregular incomes.
The gathering comes as stakeholders increasingly shift attention from simply building more housing units to expanding access to housing finance, particularly for households outside formal employment.
The two-day event will bring together national and county government leaders, financial institutions, developers, pension funds, Saccos, development finance institutions, housing agencies, investors and policymakers, alongside international experts from Japan, India, South Africa and Tanzania.
Discussions will centre on financing models for housing delivery, including blended finance and the role of development finance institutions in mobilising capital.
A dedicated session will examine strategies for reaching informal workers, micro-entrepreneurs and Sacco members who have traditionally been excluded from mortgage markets, with delegates set to explore how Saccos, which hold large volumes of member savings but often lack capacity to originate long-term mortgages, could be better linked into the housing finance system.

The programme also covers land administration reforms and title regularisation, climate-resilient and green building practices, and the application of technology and artificial intelligence across the housing value chain.
Delegates will additionally review data from Kenya’s Residential Property Price Index to inform decisions on affordability and housing demand.
The conference will draw international lessons from housing finance systems in Japan, India and South Africa, and will close with the inaugural Kenya Affordable Housing Awards, recognising primary mortgage lenders for their role in expanding home ownership and advancing sustainability in the sector.
